With existing API in InvaNode CMS you can add, delete and change users options. But yes, it is not REST and it depends on whether you logged in or not (cookie basically), so to make users change automaticaly you will have to make some effort for now, but as i can see user changes can be done from any other place.
About subscribing updates - yes, this is the place where loads of work should be done yet.
