You all should read through the MIPS arch code in the V8 code to gauge your questions. AFAIK, the MIPS port was done over a couple of years and was taken on by one or two part developers and a handful of contributors. Their approach and the one recommended by the V8 devs was to rewrite the ARM simulator port and change that code generation engine to output MIPS code. See (https://github.com/paul99/v8m-rb/wiki).
