I don't know how leveldb does LSM but I encourage you to investigate. :) Is any of that done in memory? Also what is they fear here, high write frequency? If so just bucket stuff in memory and dump to disk in batches, avoiding that problem.
The LSM tree article is surely not the most fun article to read ever, but will surely help. Also: I would just do it, but there's plenty more going on :) Good luck.
