Hi Jeroan, I'm successfully using nvm on the pi, which in turn is almost equivalent to doing a manual build - it always pulls the source and compiles locally.
The last version I installed was 0.10.22 and it worked fine. 0.11 versions also run fine. Shameless plug> If you want to test your node install on the pi, you can use my openvg or openvg-canvas modules.
