Since you can only send and receive string messages, you will need some way
to identify the different messages. One trick I usually do with this
particular module in the server is this:
var msgTypes = ['msg1', 'msg2'];
ws.on('message', function (message) {
var event;
try {
event = JSON.parse(message);
} catch(er) {
//well it wasn't json
}
if (~eventTypes.indexOf(event.name)) {
this.emit(event.name, event.payload);
}
}).on('msg1', function (data) {
//handle messages of type msg1
}).on('msg2', function (msg) {
//handle messages of type msg2
console.log(msg.foo)
});
So from the client, I can do this:
socket.sendMsg = function (type, msg) {
socket.send(JSON.stringify({ type: type, payload: msg })) ;
}
socket.sendMsg('type1, { foo: 123 });
