Another package that does that is dotenv 
(https://github.com/motdotla/dotenv).  The essence of it is in the snippet 
below which directly assigns the environment variables:


Object.keys(parsedObj).forEach(function (key) {
  process.env[key] = process.env[key] || parsedObj[key] })
});
