ROBERT Please note: forwarded message attached From: Tom Vanderlaan <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Subject: Great Extra Inning Game 7 finale Date: Sat, 5 Nov 2011 20:22:04 -0700 (PDT) Game 7- Once again the Smashers and Dragons filled the basepaths with runners all night long but failed to get the big hit. Things remained scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd when Boesch led off with a triple and Raburn grounded out to get the Dragons on the board 1-0. The Dragons were back at it in the bottom of the 4th with a Hanley Ramirez single, an A-rod walk and a double by David Ross who plated a run and then a Sweeney sac fly that brought in another run to give the Dragons a solid 3-0 commanding lead. Things were looking good as Halladay was dealing a 2 hit shut out through 6 innings. Then in the top of the 7th the Smashers got 3 consecutive singles by Denorfia, CarGo, and Konerko to load them up with no outs. That ended Halldays night. LaTroy Hawkins came on and got CSantana to sac fly out to get the Smashers on the board. Hawkins struck out Kelly Johnson to get the 2nd out of the inning. Juan Pierre was brought in to pinch hit and he calmly singled to load the bases again. Wuertz was brought on and he threw a wild pitch to bring in the 2nd run of the inning. Pinch hitter Paul Janisch was walked intentionally to load them back up again. George Sherrill was brought in to face Fukodome with the bases loaded and he got Koske to fly out. A huge bullet dodged as the Dragons clung to a 3-2 lead. The Dragons went quietly in their home half. Then the Smashers got a big solo shot from Carlos Gonzalez off relief pitcher Brandon League who has been ripping up Dragon pitching all series. This tied it at 3-3. The Dragons wasted little time as they got to work in the bottom half of the 8th inning as Soriano walked and was bunted to second by Omar Vizquel. Alex Rodriguez then hit a 2-2 fastball to deep left center for a double scoring Soriano to give the Dragons a 4-3 lead. Both Molina and Gywnn Jr walked to load the bases. Jim Thome was brought on with the crowd begging for him to blow it open. The Smashers brought on Uehara who calmly struck out Thome to keep it close 4-3. Jonathan Papelbon was brought on to close things out. Kelly Johnson greeted Papelbon with a lead off double and the crowd was quieted very quickly. Barajas was intentionally walked to make it first and second with no outs. Janisch then lined out into a hit and run double play. Fukodome then singled to make it first and 3rd. Jose Bautista was then intentionally walked to load the bases for Denorfia. The manager visited the mound to talk to Papelbon. What ever was said didn't work as he walks Denorfia to bring in the tying run making it 4-4. Papelbon was left in to face Cargo who has been wearing us out. Papelbon got a huge strike out to end the inning and blow the save! Things remained tied at 4-4 deep into extras. Capuano, Dessens, and Peavy were are all brought on in extras to hold things down. Baserunners got on, but nobody threatened much into scoring position through the extra frames. Then in the bottom of the 13th Berkman was brought on to pinch hit for Peavy and hit a walk off homer giving the Dragons a 5-4 lead and a trip to the World Series. Peavy was credited with the win and Dessens took the loss. A-rod was named series MVP hitting .357 with two homers and 10 hits for the series. Cargo for the Smashers hit .406 with two homers and 13 hits. He is a stud! Jose Bautista hit .160 going 4-25 in the series and was walked 8 times in the series and Denorfia didn't come through much in the clutch. What an awesome game 7. Stats Attached! Congrats on a solid season John. David Ortiz did the damage for the Damage at the plate hitting a solo shot in the 1st to get us on the board 1-0. Jose Molina hit a solo shot in the 3rd to give the Dragons back the lead 2-0. The Smashers scratched a run back in the top of 5 behind a Escobar walk, a Guthrie sac and a Fukodome single. Dragons get out of the inning to keep the 2-1 lead. Guthrie was throwing pretty solid and it remained that way until the bottom of the 7th when DesMoines errupted for 5 runs behind a 2 run double by Berkman and a 2 run homer by Ortiz to blow it open to 7-1 to the home crowds delight. King Felix did not have his best stuff as he was wild walking 6 batters and pitching out of jams all night but North Bay never got the big hit. Barajas did add a solo homer for the Smashers in the 8th to make it 7-2. Some series stats so far; Jose Bautista for the Smashers is hitting .200 with only one homer after hitting 50+ homers in the regular season. Hanley Ramirez for the Dragons is hitting .038(1 hit in 26 at bats) That hit came in game 6! Ouch!! Both teams are struggling a bit offensive for the series. We have both scored 21 runs in the 6 games averaging 3.5 a game. The Dragons have out-homered the Smashers 9-4. North Bay has left 62 players on base with DesMoines leaving 39. I think has been the key to the whole series. North Bay not getting that big hit or this series would have been over! So I imagine the series will come down to Halladay vs Garcia in the finale. Time will tell. Konerko tried to tie it but the split card did him in on a homerun pulling a 17. Series goes back to Des Moines for the final 2 againts the terrible 2 headed monster in Frod and Halladay. Tom just play my regular right handed lineup for the 2 games. I have a feeling it will be like the rangers and falling just short for the Smashers.
