I don't know if this adds anything, but i use an NSM sessions with
jackpatch, jack keyboard into a synth, and plugins with and without
non-daw and with either the PI's default soundcard, or with usb
soundcards.

if i use the usb soundcards I have to open qjackctl to select them
over the PIs default.

However, if I'm just using the default, I don't start jack. When i
open the session in NSM, jack starts without qjackctl(or command line)
and i've never had a problem with the jack connections remembered by
jackpatch.

However, the variable for me beyond crashing was building the NON
packages on the pi instead of using the kxstudio repository. Also I
now setup the kxstudio repository right after installing raspbian to
use all their audio packages. I only have assumptions why everything
SEEMS to play better together this way beyond non-daw crashing etc,
for example my problems with debian's outdated vmpk not fitting
workflows, and sid(testing) audio packages not working well together.

Again beyond non-daw crashing, these are just things that happened
that have too many other variables to make even good guesses about the
causes, but my mileage with kxstudio all the way around has worked.

I tried several setups until mine mentioned above worked where I start
my pi, open an NSM session, turn on my external speaker and i'm good
to go without qjackctl, unless i want to change a connection(which i
also use command line for sometimes). As i was figuring out my final
set of connections/apps etc with jackpatch and the several apps I
tried, they all played well together after kxstudioing my audio.
