Hi-

Im a linux proponent.

I run Npohost, Inc. (http://www.npohost.org). We do web-hosting and service providing for Nonprofits. We are so small that we only exist because we had a server donated to us, and we continue to have space in a datacenter donated to us. We run our servers using linux, which gives us the flexibility, security, and licensing costs that we (or I personally) can afford.

I think linux and the NPO world could be a real match made in heaven.

1. Low budgets of npo's with the licensing cost of linux (linux is free, no thousands needed to spend elsewhere)

2. Low budgets/high cost of tech workers with the remote administration capabilities of linux... you dont need to have that full time tech guy working for you because he/she can do work on lots of computers for many organizations remotely. A shared tech guy could run the networks for several NPO's from the same location.

3. Flexibility. So many projects that exist in the linux/open source world are fantastic. If you have a need that is close to one of those needs, you can take the project and modify it to your needs. Many groups are also very open to suggestions and recommendations that they might even make that change for you!

The list could go on.

I think linux is great, i think that NPO's are great. Together, a lot of good can be accomplished with limited resources.

Hello all,

I work with a non-profit that uses linux, and also work with a group of
volunteers that helps support Linux solutions in NPO's. You can check out
more about that group at http://npotechs.org I want to second Wayne's
comments about the utlitity of linux in the NPO environment.
