We have a simple excel thermometer which we provide to our clients. I would be happy to share it with anyone who would like to try it. Using it requires that the development staff quantify the pending foundation and corporate grants as to the likely hood that they will be obtained. (You can also use this for individual donors with contributions pending and deduct bad debt.)

For example, a $10,000 grant to a first time funder with limited knowledge of your organization would be rated as a 20% chance for the grant, and statistically counted as $2,000 pending. Development would then have to bring in another $8,000 to complete the 10,000 goal. The brackets are 20%, 50% and 80% (sorry no 100% for foundations or corporations!) The totals of money secured, money pending and money to be raised creates the campaign thermometer. You can display this by program or by overall campaign.

It makes a nice report for the finance committee or board.
