is an over three-fold increase in the figures of ragging cases reported
from across the country in the last four months compared with the same
period last year, an anti-ragging forum claimed on Sunday. According
to 'Coalition to Uproot Ragging from Education' (CURE), there were 52
incidents of ragging reported in the media between May 21 and September
21. The figures for the corresponding period last year was 15, it said
adding they have arrived at the statistics by going through the reports
appearing on online editions of national English newspapers.
Preliminary analysis reveals that there were six suicides and three
attempted suicides due to ragging and 17 instances of physical abuse,
the CURE said.In an interim order, the Supreme Court had on May 20 said
an FIR must be filed in case of incidences of ragging and courts should
ensure that such cases are taken on a priority basis.
