Two students of the National Institute of Fashion Technology,
Gandhinagar, are facing the music for allegedly ragging freshers in two
separate incidents that took place last week. The students — an
18-year-old youth in third semester of Fashion Technology Department
and a 21-year-old final year student of Fashion Design Department —
have suspended till officials in Delhi decide their fate.

Confirming the incidents, NIFT director Nitesh Kumar Vyas said, “The
director general in Delhi will take the final call. Till then, the two
students have been asked to stay off the campus.”

Both the incidents took place after college hours. The 18-year-old
youth stopped two girls from leaving the campus, which made them miss
their bus home. One of the girls was from Delhi. Her local guardian
lodged a complaint against the third semester student, accusing him of
“unparliamentary behaviour”.

The second complaint was lodged by parents of a female student living
in Ahmedabad against a final year student of Fashion Design Department.
The parents alleged that the 21-year-old youth had commented on their
ward’s dress, saying she should be wearing salwar-kameez in college.
The ‘victim’ was wearing jeans-top at the time of the incident. NIFT
has a seven-member anti-ragging squad that goes around hostels even
during the night.

Students and their parents are also made to sign an undertaking that
their ward will not get involved in any such activity. Requesting
anonymity, a member of the anti-ragging committee said, “The girls were
ragged last week. Both the accused have confessed to the crime, which
could influence the degree of punishment doled out to them.”

Recently, National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad had thrown out
a student for ragging a fresher. Even the Supreme Court has come down
heavily on ragging. In February, the court had directed all educational
institutions to take stringent anti-ragging measures, including filing
criminal cases against erring students.
