SINDRI: Three students of BIT Sindri were taken to task for ragging on
Thursday.

Not hesitating to crack the whip, the authorities barred Ashutosh
Tarun, Ashish Sharma and Rohit Barnwal, all third-semester students of
production engineering, from entering the institute hostel for an
indefinite period and prevented them from taking part in all academic
activities, including attending classes and library, for 15 days.
Besides, a fine of Rs 20,000 each has been imposed on the three. Also,
an FIR has been filed against the students at the local polce station.

According to professor G Kumar, the general warden of BIT Sindri, when
the newly admitted students were returning to their respective hostels
after attending classes in metallurgical and chemical engineering
buildings in the afternoon, Tarun, Sharma and Barnwal stopped them near
the administrative building and asked them to bow before every senior
and pass through the area in a zig-zag manner with their bodies
half-bent as a mark of respect to the seniors. Reportedly, the freshers
were also told not to lift their heads even once throughout the
exercise.

However, as luck would have it, the institute director, the general
warden and six hostel superintendents came out of the administrative
building at that time and saw the act for themselves. Then, they chased
the three, caught them and seized their identity cards.

Besides punishing the three students, institute director S K Singh said
a copy of the action taken report has been sent to the Dhanbad deputy
commissioner, the superintendent of police and other senior officials
for further action.
