ALLAHABAD: Ragging continues unchecked despite directives of the
Supreme Court. A student of a private engineering college become the
latest victim of harrasment and physical torture at the hands of his
seniors.

The victim, Bindesh Tiwari, hailing from a village in Janghai block in
Jaunpur had taken admission in the college in the 2009-10 session. He
was staying at the hostel.

On Tuesday evening, a group of seniors reportedly came to his room and
started taking his `introduction' even as they started searching his
belongings. In between the `introduction', the seniors started taunting
him about his family members, leaving Bindesh distressed. Even as they
continued tormenting him, one of them asked him to present a dance item.

It was at this point of time that Bindesh slumped on the floor and fell
unconsicious. In the meantime, someone informed the warden and proctor
who arrived on the scene and took the student to a hospital from where
he was discharged after treatment. The authorities of the institute
also infomed the family members of the student who also arrived to take
care of Bindesh.

Reacting to the incident, his brother demanded an inquiry into the
incident and strict punishment for the seniors involved in it. The
family took away Bindesh back home.

The director of the institute said that arrangemnts have been made to
ensure that juniors are not harrassed by seniors. On the issue of
Bindesh, he said that the youth boy had a history of epilepsy and
during the course of interaction with the seniors he suffered an
attack. The authorities are questioning the senior students. After a
preliminary inquiry, action would be taken against them if found
guilty.
