Note finally that you could avoid such "incorrect" guess of the hostname, if
your local OS was configured to use a local DNS cache; You can enable this cache
in your local DNS client: it will resolve locally the inverse resolution request
if it can find a recent resolution request (i.e. the request that was
necessarily
used by GUP.exe when it attempted to resolve the name
"notepadplusplus.sourceforge.net" into an IP address, before even trying to
send the first IP request there (the IP that your firewall is now trying to
identify).

Yes of course! It's ridiculous to open a new file when we close all tabs. This
should just means the same as exit (notably because when you close a file that
was the single one used, the "new" empty file will have no use, but the user
won't notice that Notepad++ maintains the current working directory on the
location
of the last open file: this effectively forbids (for example) deleting the
directory
where the last file was open.

Try this:
* create a new file save it alone in a new directory (this is typically what
many softwares are doing when creating log files or temporary files, and it
fails, leaving these files for user review).
* So open this file in notepad++ (this is what you would do to look at the log
file or temporary files left by a command that failed to execute: you open it
in an editor to see what was wrong, then you try correcting the situation).
* Then close that file. (you would typically do this after correcting the
problem
discovered after reviewing the log files or temporary files left by some failing
command). Now Notepad++ should no longer have any link to the last open file
or its storage directory.
* Try deleting the directory containing the dummy file and all its content (this
is what you would do to cleanup the temporary files or log files left by a
failing
command: all the files will effectively be deleted as expected, but as long
as Notepad++ is running, it won't let you delete the directory because Notepad++
is still using it as its current working directory, and Windows makes sure that
the working directory is locked by the process.

I do think that Notepad++ forgets to remove the directory change listener after
it closes the file, and still locks that directory. I do think this is a bug
in Notepad++: the editor should not lock things that he no longer uses or needs.

In other words: we DO NEED to close Notepad++ COMPLETELY. Leaving it open with
a new empty file is harmful as long as Notepad++ locks things it should not
have to lock exclusively (and I've seen that Notepad++ is leaking some directory
change listeners even though it does no logner need them (as there's no file
currently open in those directory, so such listener is NOT needed to
automatically
detect changes in another process).

Ideally, Notepad++ should be able to release ALL its lock when closing ALL
files,
and then being able to stay running in the System Tray only, ready to load a
new file immediately (as all its plugins are already loaded). But as long as
there's no such mode, there's ABSOLUTELY NO NEED to keep Notepad++ open after
closing the last file. It's best (and safer) to exit it completely.

The leaking "locked current working directory" is HARMFUL in multi-user
environments,
because it can locks a shared directory on another server, and it may block
other users (or administration tools) from cleaning up empty directories
(notably
in unique folders created for temporary objects). In some case, it could block
or hand a precious webserver or SQL server, blocking it from normal cleanup
operations!

Actually, Notepad++ cannot even open a UTF16-LE text file it it contains no
leading BOM!
Notepad++ can ONLY perform autodetection of the encoding if there's a leading
BOM, but does not allow specifying the encoding for loading a file.

It can be admissible to open a file without first specifying the encoding, but
there REALLY SHOULD exist a menu option to reload the file (or reinterpret it)
with another encoding.

DON'T ASSUME that a leading BOM is present in all Unicode encoded files (UTF-8,
UTF-16BE, UTF-16LE, UTF-32LE, UTF-32BE) because in fact this is wrong, and for
some applications, storing a BOM even in a UTF-8 file will be incorrect.

Note that storing a leading BOM when saving to a UTF-16LE or UTF-16BE or
UTF-32-LE
or UTF-32BE file is NON-CONFORMING, and COMPLETELY INCORRECT according to the
Standard. BOMs are ONLY acceptable in UTF-8, UTF-16 (not UTF-16LE or UTF-16BE)
and UTF-32 (not UTF-32LE or UTF-32BE).

This is a serious COMPATIBILITY BUG, including for some Windows system files
that DON'T WANT any BOM in some files encoded in UTF-16LE (not UTF-16!).

Note for example that a compliant Java compiler will reject a Java source file
starting with a BOM, despite Java source fil?es CAN be encoded with Unicode.

Don't assume that all programming source files are using an 8-bit only encoding
(or even UTF-8). Don't assume that source files are ASCII-based or use some
(non portable) ANSI or OEM encoding.

Note that there's NO such encoding like "ANSI" or "OEM". These are just
placeholders
for codepages that vary from system to system, including on Windows. The "ANSI"
and "OEM" encodings are just MISNOMERS inherited from OLD Windows API
compatibility;
they are even officially seriously deprecated on Windows (only some OEM
encodings
are really needed for some kernel drivers at boot time when they need to log
some mesages on the debug console, when the internationalization support is
still not loaded). You should not advertize these ambiguous terms.

Please refer to actual codepage numbers or names in Notepad++, and PLEASE let
users select the appropriate codepage (don't assume the local system default
as the file may come from another host using different system settings for the
"ANSI" or "OEM" pseudo-codepages!)

Ad 1: bla-bla-bla, go play outside, please and start complaining about anything

Ad 2: this has been reported before. If you really feel like being so elaborate
about a problem, wouldn't it just as well make sense to look for a report on
this first, before explaining it all and all over and over and even too much
over again?

Ad 3: why not do it yourself? The source is available. I suggest you also remove
all those languages you don't think are interesting or you simply don't use.
Cut the crap out of it, and it will suit all your wishes! But remember: YOU
have to do it. I guess that's not so attractive to you as complaining here about
all and all that's wrong in your eyes.
