I'm trying to setup a command in Notepad++ that will compile a file but I'm
having some problems.

1) Can I set an initial directory for my command to be run from? (eg.
c:\my_program)
2) Can I have my command pause after execution? (eg. the compiler executes
so quickly I cannot even see any errors if they appear)

I'd like to set this functionality on a shortcut so I can just press a button
and it will happen...

Can anybody help me out?

You can do it in the Advanced Replace.

TextFX -> TextFX Quick -> Find/Replace (or CTRL-R)

Use CTRL-M for line breaks.

Is it possible to (permanently) marked characters upon block / column selection
by a different color or font e. g. in order to visualize alterations performed
in this mode? Thanks a lot for help!

It depends on how hard your returns are...

Perhaps it would be better to link to one of the many former messages, in which
this is discussed before. This will also avoid answers being unclear, resulting
in only more messages about the same subject.

If you have a question, first look for an answer. Then, if you can't find it,
ask your question.

How about this?

I was comparing two scratch files to get a feeling of the differences between
them.
I closed both files.

Then I cleared the compare results.
This opened a new document and seemed to have no further effect.
Although this is not bothering me much, it doesn't seem necessary (or right).
Next to that, how about all those "remembered" different lines?
Will they leave a residu somewhere, if the results aren't cleared before
closing?

What do you want, see differences? There's a Compare Plug-In for that...

Let's say I simply want to insert some text at my current cursor position...

How do I do this? It looks like I need to send the SCI_INSERTTEXT message but
I'm really not sure how to do this. I've tried looking at the Delphi template
and the DbgpPlugin source code but it doesn't look like either of them send
any Scintilla messages.

Can anybody help me out?

Use the win32 SendMessage function with the scintilla handles found in NppData,
which gets set at startup of the plugin. Cross reference the delphi plugin with
the original N++ NppInsertPlugin template, it inserts text aswell (date/time).
I dk about Delphi, but it should work similar to the c++ examples, just written
differently ;)

Ends-of-lines is hard. But now this thread covers it since the two methods
of doing anything with end-of-lines (that isn't standard regex) are here:

You can do it in the Advanced Replace.

TextFX -> TextFX Quick -> Find/Replace (or CTRL-R)

Use CTRL-M for line breaks.

AND

View in hex with hex plugin and find/replace (at will :

Plugins -> HEX-Editor -> View in HEX    CTRL+Alt+Shift+H (toggle)

(and Ctrl+F/H/R to bring up the find/replace dialogs)

"0d 0a" is both carriage-return and newline (too bad \r\n doesn't work in ascii)

Hi,

I've been using this great text editor already for some time now (kudos to the
author!). Recently, I had upgraded to the version 4.6 and started experiencing
an unusualy long startup program time. Every time I try to launch the Notepad++,
it takes about 10 seconds for the main window to appear. It is so annoying.
Does anyone know how to get rid of that issue?

Thanks in advance for your comments!
Ivo

Great work! Here's the problems I had:

It found all the differences (whole lines were transposed in several places)
but I got confused because the last character was always missing on one of the
lines - so I thought this was the problem/difference. I had to open the files
elsewhere to see that no character was actually missing.

Today I opened a file to compare with the one I was editing. No lines were
the same. I went to close the second file I had opened but there was no way
to close it until I right-clicked on its tab. After I closed it, my original
file had 800 blank lines in it where the other file "was". This all didn't
seem too graceful - until I saw the way to close the plugin is
plugins->compare->clear results.

it's very important to have.

You can also use the TextFX Viz plugin that comes with Notepad++ to hide all
the non-matching lines so that you can copy them to the clipboard. I don't
think it supports regex though.
