On my pc at home I create a new file, ctrl+s, the file type in the drop down
box is All Types *.*, type the filename in and the extension I want it to be,
and im done. At work, I create a new file, ctrl+s, the default file type is
Normal Text (*.txt), I click All Types manually and proceed to name my file
something.tpl for example. The dialog closes, my file is saved as something.txt
instead.

I found the preference for default file type in Settings -> Preferences -> New
Document -> Default Language. But all types isn't selectable. I have the
latest
version of notepad++, is it because I might have an older version at home?
Am I missing a setting somewhere? This is driving me nuts.

Now I'm even more mad. I downloaded the smarty user defined language file.
Set Smarty as my default file type, I hit save and the default file type in
the box says All Types (*.*). So I name it something.tpl. Close the dialog
window only to see that its been named something.txt. If I save something and
dont specify an extension (eg "smarty") then it gets named with no ext. w.t.f.

I did a search and I see others have had this problem, but there's not solution.
I've change3d the langs.xml to open ASP using the VB profile, but it woul d
be great to understand whay this happens.

Agreed - VBS files causes the same issue (when you execute them they simply
open in NPP). SInce it's so "easy" to associate them, there should be some
thought
as to how they assigned (I know that this does not matter in ASP and some other
"source" languages, like CXX< in fact it's an advantage (click and it opens),
but in executable script files (BAT, VBS, etc.) it shoudl default to just takign
over the "editing" bit.

I've read that Notepad++ can be used as HEX editor.
But I don't find how to do it.

I've read the FAQ, but did not find anything about this subject.

I believe the Hex Editor plugin comes standard with Notepad++. If not, you'll
need to download it from the Notepad++ Downloads page.

To switch to Hex Editing mode:

Plugins -> Hex-Editor -> View in Hex

Use the same to turn off Hex Editing mode.

1) Turn on the Favorites:

Plugins -> Explorer -> Favorites

2) Right-click on one of the icons, depending on what you want to add. For
folders, right-click on folders. For files, right click on files, and so forth.

3) If you want to add a sub-heading, click on Add Group. If you want to add
a file or folder itself, click on Add File or Add Folder.

4) The rest should be self-explanatory.

Hi. I just upgraded to v4.6, and it's still using Comic Sans for comments.
Can this please be removed? This is a code editor and it needs to be in a
monospace
font, including the comments.

... it needs ...

Sounds like YOU THINK you need it.
And Notepad++ is fully configurable to meet your needs.

So just do a simple job yourself, instead of repeating claims and complaints.
Thank you.
