Because there are single focus tools to do so.
If you want to replace all found occurrences in documents and have to edit them
further anyway, you still have to open these files. There's no better way to
not screw up anything than to open those files and replace all occurences in
the opened documents instead of using Notepad++ to work on files directly
without
opening them. Don't you think so?

blueocean,
try this:
1) close Notepad++ if it's opened
2) be sure you have a file "doLocalConf.xml" in your Notepad++ folder; if there
is no such file, create an empty file with this name
3) remove all the plugins (DLL-files) from Notepad++\plugins folder
4) start Notepad++ and try to open files from your drive C.
5) if you still have the crash, I can only recommend you to try to debug
Notepad++
from Visual C++ Express; if you don't know how to do this - just forget about
this...
6) if you have no crashes without plugins, then return the plugins DLL files
back to Notepad++\plugins folder, one by one, restarting Notepad++ after each
DLL file has been returned to the plugins folder, to understand which DLL file
causes the crash.

You can use the program FinePrint.
The test version prints a comment of the author on every page.

This is the OP again.
Seriously, nobody has any idea? It makes it impossible to use NPP for what I
need and there's no discernable reason at all that I can see for this to happen.

Try a clean install of notepad++ w/o plugins. If the problem persists, could
you send an example file or something? The screenshot results in a 403 forbidden
:).

I have a testbuild with this fixed, I hope.

Should be fixed in a next release. If possible, try replace all, which does
work

That page should be updated I guess, v4.9 allows you to type '\r' and '\n' when
you use the "Extended" search type (which is normal search but with escape
characters).
See also the v4.9 release notes.

I like the autodetection feature, but with a dozen network files it's way too
slow. I tried checking the "update silently" box but that doesn't seem to make
much difference.
I suggest: display the current page with changes locked, then perform foreground
detection of the active file, then unlock the active file, then detect the
others
in the background.
I only ask because otherwise NP++ is a dream editor.

Hmmm, great program, and the HIDE LINES feature is something I've been trying
to find for a long time. However, I fail to see the logic of this particular
intentional behaviour. I can't think of a single instance where it would be
useful for hidden lines to reveal themselves automatically just because I
temporarily
switch to another tab, whereas the benefits of NOT doing so are obvious.
Mercifully,
multi-view does not suffer from this "feature":)

OK, thanks.
Other current alternatives are replacing by adding some token also added to
the find field, or using the CTRL+R dialog.

Well, that first bug is by design, the groupbox means that the In selection
checkbox only applies to marking, not the actual search. When searching, the
search actually happens _outside_ the selection.
If searching down, itll search below the selection, otherwise itll search above
the selection. It was like that when I started on the search functions and I
havent changed that, though it might be worth changing that a little.
As for the volatile search altering the normal search behaviour: I'll look into
that. Currently, both systems seem to use the same datastructure, so when
volatile
overrides the normal one, the find dialog acts a little out of sync.
The alt-tab thing is something about the window manager. It doesnt really like
Toolwindows that have the actual focus.

It's very annoying, that keyboard hotkeys don't map other applications'
hotkeys.
I'm used to Ctrl+Z for undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z for redo. I ofter undo just to
copy
somethink I erased awhile ago, and then redo to the initial state. But striking
Ctrl+Shift+Z inserts some symbol and erases all my history.
I doubt that symbol is that important. Could you change hotkey so that
Ctrl+Shift+Z works as Redo and is inserted using some other hotkey,
please?
