"That might be often right but it?s also an easy excuse."

Indeed, but riddle me this: how often do you need to open a really big file?
What kind of files are they? Do you need to *edit* them, or just view them?

Don's answer about requiring the whole file to be loaded for syntax highlighting
is one thing I would expect, but that brings up another question. Syntax
highlighting is useful for viewing the structure of program code. Do you
actually
have modules of source code that are that large? I can see it being potentially
useful for XML files, which can get huge, but I prefer a specialized tool if
I need to deal with stuff like that. It might also be useful for log files
if you define a syntax highlighter for the structure of that particular log,
but again, a specialized tool is probably a better bet. (For log files I want
a viewer with a regular expression search facility, since what I'm interested
in will be specific messages related to errors. I don't care about the rest
of the file.)

I like things like less for file viewing because they begin displaying the file
as soon as enough is buffered from disk to do so. I don't have long wait for
things to show at all. And I never need to *edit* files that size, so the fact
it's a viewer only isn't an issue. (Less can also call whatever is defined
as the standard editor on a system to edit the file being viewed, but it's up
to the user to know if doing that makes sense for the file being viewed.)

One option for NP++ might be a "view" mode for big files that explicitly turns
*off* syntax highlighting to save time, and doesn't provide editing.

I noticed the new menu command to delete the file. Although a warning is
displayed
users might actually delete their work instead of saving it. Please modify this
command to move files to the recycle bin.

Sorry, answering myself here, but with "don't use appdata", recent files work
again.

Seeing as N++ had full access to the appdata dir, i don't get it. Maybe someone
can explain.

Simply put, I want notepad++ to open up to my website directory and not the
notepad++ files directory which it does by default. Does anyone know how I can
configure it to open up to a directory of my choosing when I open new files?

I'm not sure about on Linux but I've tried running 5.0 on Wine 1.1.0 on Mac
OS X 10.5.4 and I get a "_hSelf == NULL" , "God Damned Exception : 999" then
recovery initiating when I try and run it. 4.9.2 runs nicely though.

Just thought I'd let people know.

I second this. Komodo Edit (not nearly as good as n++ has this and is built
on scintilla. This would be a great plugin. (hint, hint jenz ;) ) .

When I create new file, paste to it source of any web page, save as *.html or
*.php it recognize the language and change to html or php but doesn't highlight
code. I have to change language to any other and again to html or php, or close
file and open it again to have my code highlighted.

I don't know if this will help others, but it made my life much easier.
I was frustrated with the limitations of the macro system, but didn't want to
program my own plugins for simple things, but I realized that the Run menu will
run anything that you can use in Shell.Run
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d5fk67ky(VS.85).aspx), including script
files for Windows Script Host, and that script can use SendKeys
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8c6yea83(VS.85).aspx) to communicate
back to Notepad++.

So, for example, a simple script to wrap text in a <span> tag would be:

var s = WScript.Arguments(0);
WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell").SendKeys('<span>' + s + '</span>');

Save it as a .js file (say, "span.js") and enter the following in the Run...
dialog:

"path/to/span.js" "$(CURRENT_WORD)"

and save it, and voila! instant javascript macro.

Obviously, this is more useful with more sophisticated scripts, and you have
to read the SendKeys documentation for the special characters and escape codes.
You probably want to include a line like

s = s.replace(/([[+^%{}\]])/g, '{$1}').replace('\n', '{ENTER}').replace('\t',
'{TAB}');

to avoid problems.

You can use any language that WSH understands, like VBScript or even Perl
(http://www.xav.com/perl/Components/Windows/PerlScript.html)

OMG, this is amazing, this should go right to the Notepad++
features/documentation,
along with some useful scripts.

Playing with this I notice that $(CURRENT_WORD) uses \r\n for the line
separator,
which gets turned into two separate line endings. Also, the 'replace's should
be global.

So the string should be
s = s.replace(/([[+^%{}\]])/g, '{$1}').replace(/\r/g,'').replace(/\n/g,
'{ENTER}').replace(/\t/g, '{TAB}');
