Hi i want to use notepad++ as an external editor for a simulation software.
For this purpose i got a "userDefineLang.xml" file which should be placed in
the notepad++ home directory to add an aditional user defined language for
syntax
highlighting. But it seems that this way is a little bit outdated because
placing
the file in the home directory does not add anything to notepad++.
Is there a way to use this file in some way? Can i copy its content and put
it in another file or something like this?

Looking for a way to define a list of text strings and then apply color
formatting
to the entire line if the line contains the string. I would like it to colorize
the entire line, not just the word.

Thank you

Its hidden in the FAQ on the wiki:
http://notepad-plus.wiki.sourceforge.net/FAQ

you need to put it in %APPDATA% (look for userDefineLang.xml entries)

I get frequent crashes in N++ when just opening some files that contain some
binary data.

A simple test you can reproduce:

>From an original Windows XP CDROM (retail or OEM, full or upgrade version),
just extract one of the two files that are present in the Boot image; if you
can't read it with your CD/DVD burning application, use the "IsoBuster" program
(the free version is enough if you don't need to recover lost files from an
existing D/DVD):
http://www.isobuster.com/

With IsoBuster, extract the two files from the Windows installation CD which
are named "Microsoft Corporation.img" and "BootCatalog.cat", they are quite
small (2 048 bytes each one).

Just try to open any one of them in N++, and see the immediate crash that
follows.

I suspect some severe internal bugs like buffer overruns in N++ when handling
binary files...

(Version note: I use the latest release of N++, version 5.0.3 as of today)

I have not analyzed which binary patterns in files cause this crash, but at
least it just demonstrate that files do not need to be large (2 KB here is less
than one page of memory, and less than one cluster on hard-disk, and exactly
one sector on a CD or DVD).

Such crash can be very harmful, when you're currently editing a set of files,
and just select the wrong one, containing some binary data.

Final note: those two binary files open fine in Windows standard notepad.exe,
or wordpad.exe, or in GNU Vim, no the same system. This is certainly not a
windows
issue but really a severe N++ bug.

For your information, here is the hex/ascii dump of the second file
(BootCatalog.cat):

0000 : 01 00 00 00 4D 69 63 72 6F 73 6F 66 74 20 43 6F ....Microsoft Co
0010 : 72 70 6F 72 61 74 69 6F 6E 00 00 00 4C 49 55 AA rporation...LIU.
0020 : 88 00 00 00 00 00 04 00 0D 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

(the rest of the 2KB file is filled with null bytes).

It looks like N++ does not like null bytes at end of files that it tries to
open (nulls at the beginning does not look as causing such crash)

However, the "Microsoft Corporation.img" 2KB file does not end with null bytes,
but just contains long series of nulls near the end of file:
