Is has been a while, for some time I simply tried to deal with the problem,
blaming my Windows XP installation or configuration.
Updating N++ up to 5.4.4 didn't solve anything, even a clean XP install.
To the symptoms described originally I can confirm that an "error sound" is
played when closing N++ and the one-char-title-bar is displayed.
As dv__ suggested I tried disabling the plugins one by one, and found the bad
guy:
NppExec.dll
It's a plugin that I never used (I didn't even know it existed, actually)
It remains a mistery for me why this DLL has anything to do with the title bar
when I simply choose to open a random file. I mean: do creating empty documents
and switching the tabs have anything to do with "executing a script"?
Dunno. For now I'm fairly happy with this plugin disabled.
Just wanted you to know that NppExec.dll is the apparent cause to the reported
problem.

I recorded:
blocked initial char in line,
then selected TextFX > TextFXcharacters > lowercase
then move to next initial char in line
What I Expected:
Apple
Book
Care
to become
apple
book
care
What happened:
apple
aook
aare
Can anybody please help.
Result -- the char was replaced with the char on which I did the macro.

What Scintilla recorded is that you inserted a "a", so that was dutifully
recorded
and replayed.
Do you have the same issue using Edit -> Convert case -> to lowzexase instead?
