It happens exactly the same for me. I open a file, and the marker on the left
is all yellow, if a edit the file, NPP hangs. I can close the file and open
it again and its ok, but sometimes I have to reopen the file many times before
it opens it without the yellow markers.

Hi all,
I can't find the author of NP++ so, I am reporting the error here.
Please try to open the attached file with new NP++ (above 5.3), and open
the file with a simple notepad. Somehow NP++ open the file with
incorrect character encodings. This bug is from NP++ version 5.4.
