Thanks, Josh for running my test.  This is another great data point: RHEL6 
glibc memory management is pretty awful!

If anyone wants my little test program, I can add it to the ticket.  It's 
nothing fancy, so I've not bothered.  I'll commit it once I figure out how to 
create an automated functional test that will ensure that memory stays 
"reasonable."
