bq. Scalability tests also are hardcoded to write to the root of HDFS. Maybe 
the same remedy can be applied there.

The tests do their own configuration and scripts currently. At first glance, I 
don't see anything obvious that would be reusable. Feel free to open a ticket 
for the scalability tests.
