Ok. I will pull it back into 1.7.0. If someone picks it up, great. Otherwise,
it'll be done later.

Adding closeable would still be source-compatible which, I believe, is
sufficient for our current guarantees. I'm not sure about binary compat but we
don't have a strong story there anyways.
