It looks like this has already been resolved. As of the 1.7 branch, the code is
now:
final String dateFormatStr = conf.get(Property.MONITOR_LOG_DATE_FORMAT);
SimpleDateFormat fmt;

fmt = new SimpleDateFormat(dateFormatStr);
} catch (IllegalArgumentException e) {
