Review comment:
       I just re-read the javadoc for the DataOutputStream, and while it only 
guarantees that it can be read back via a DataInputStream, leaving some 
ambiguity about whether it can write any metadata to the stream, the current 
implementation doesn't do that and it would break things if it started doing 
to. So, it's fine.
