**Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.** A new test was added in #5044 based on a performance problem in 4.0.0-SNAP. **Describe the solution you'd like** While the problem fixed in 4.0 likely does not exist in 2.1, it would be good to backport the test in #5044 to 2.1.
