   For what it is worth, the [FreeBSD port of 
CouchDB](https://cgit.freebsd.org/ports/tree/databases/couchdb3) still uses an 
[`rc.d` script](https://docs.freebsd.org/en/articles/rc-scripting/) to start 
and stop the application.  I believe that is a different conversation to decide 
if FreeBSD constitutes a modern system, but it proves that CouchDB could be 
managed without `systemd`.
