Since the alerting rework in 1.7, availability alert rules are no longer created automatically. To be alerted when ping fails or times out, create a threshold rule in Alert Settings, choose Ping > Availability (this generates the expression `equals(__app__,"ping") && equals(__available__,"down")`), and bind it to your monitors.
