Overall +1 lowering the contribution bar is great. I would document this, and make the intent clear (helper to fasten onbarding nix users as devs). Readme? Or https://james.staged.apache.org/james-project/3.9.0/community/contributing.html ? Because if undocumented I fear this might get unoticed and do not deliver its full potential.
