The wacky patternLayout for SystemOut was just to show that I was getting a 
similar error/stacktrace at log4j start in 2.16.0.

I too am confused as to the impact of this bug (I haven't been able to disrupt 
anything locally on 2.16), but was more trying to help improve the 
documentation on this bug by providing an example that someone could modify to 
show me the the DOS part of this bug.

As far as I can see, the worst problem is losing log messages in versions < 2.16
