Exception rendering logic of `PatternLayout` has quite some room for
improvement. Various components evolved individually rather than building upon
a shared foundation. This causes behaviour discrepancies similar to the one you
reported. Another broken directive is `%xEx{ [ "short" | depth ] }`, see
LOG4J2-3627 #1137. I would appreciate a structural fix there.
