SimpleDateFormat has not been deprecated, has it? If there's a static SimpleDateFormat object we could use a ThreadLocal to restore thread safety. Removing SimpleDateFormat and replacing it with newer APIs from a >500k LOC codebase is out of the question. As requested previously by different committers in different PRs of yours, please discuss whatever you want to contribute in the mailing lists _before_ actually submitting them, to avoid wasting your time, and ours.
