another bogeyman showed up: https://download.java.net/java/early_access/jdk20/docs/api/java.base/java/lang/ThreadGroup.html#stop() will throw UOEs too. https://download.java.net/java/early_access/jdk20/docs/api/java.base/java/lang/ThreadGroup.html#destroy() is now a no-op. Tested NB on JDK 20 a bit and things did work pretty good already.
