Using a separate warehouse for the shop floor is a common scenario in many
Manufacturing companies. This is due to the separation of responsibilities
between a Production Manager and a Warehouse Manager. The Production Manager is
responsible for the timely execution of production runs and the quality of
their output. The Warehouse Manager is responsible for the correct inventory
registration of incoming and outgoing goods.
In planning phases, the Manufacturing Manager can initiate transfer requests
to the Warehouse Manager to have components delivered to the shop floor for
timely execution of production run tasks.
This is especially important when the company not only sells assembled
products, but also the components to their customers.
