I may have time to try some changes. The aim is to refactor the code without removing the existing functions. The start is to get something that still works. Then it should be feasible to have a configurable setup where the new code is used or the legacy code is used. This would allow some comparative testing. It is not my aim to look to merge anything in the near future.
