Following up here - I looked into this but I wasn't able to figure out what's going wrong. The problem is the related code paths are very convoluted right now, and there's a lot of room for improvement. So I can definitely work on this and clean it up some, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to do so (I don't want to set unrealistic expectations).
