This would be a great improvement! My opinion as a project management committee (PMC) member is that this does not require a SIP. A SIP gets discussed and voted upon before implementation and is great for making sure that we are all aligned on complex improvements before they come through as a pull request. SIPs are great! But this is super straightforward: you want to add a piece of functionality to a database that's missing it. In my opinion, what you've proposed is good and sufficient, and you can go ahead and open a pull request that implements it.
