Trying to understand where we're at here, but I think fewer controls is better if that makes sense... The "sensible default" (outside the bar, at the end of the bar) can be set dynamically as you suggest @SBIN2010 (top for column mode, right for horizontal bar), but then if a user actually SETS something (like "inside") then I'm OK with that single control "sticking" where it's set when changing orientation.
