Review Comment:
   Yes, could not get rid of interpolate + this keeps the ability to actually 
implement an interpolation easily when it is desired (ie. when defining custom 
buckets/intervals with inner shading).
   I agree it could be simplified, though i'd keep the interpolate and only 
return a.
