Thanks again for digging into this with me @orbisai0security. As we landed on above, the hardening this set out to add is already on master, so I'll close this as superseded. I pulled the one genuinely-new thing the bots surfaced (the `OverflowError` on a non-finite `exp`) into #41394 so that value isn't lost.
