above, the new `except` blocks in `api.py` are dead code after a rebase because
`@handle_api_exception` already handles both error types centrally. The warning
message improvement and `UPDATING.md` note about the separate guest-token JWT
config are still worthwhile ideas though, so feel free to reopen or open a
fresh narrow PR for just that piece if you're up for it!
