Sorry for the silence here. You're right that `current_user_roles()` doesn't solve this. That's session-scoped custom data, not something the security manager tracks. I don't have a clean answer for why the session doesn't populate when a chart is opened from SQL Lab specifically, that'd need someone to actually trace the request context differences between the two paths. Can you confirm this is still reproducing on a recent (6.x / master) build?
