I think one nice thing about the int is that it augments the status code and can be grouped in much the same way as HTTP statues, i.e. [10000,11000) are for error class A, and [11000,12000) are for class B, etc.. I can see what you're saying from the point of view of improving the readability of the errors based on code. Seems fine either way :)
