I'm leaning toward classifying this as a feature PR, although I agree that it improves error handling. Before the change, running TablesPlot on an empty table caused a raw AttributeError; after the change, it returns the intended error message. The change mainly improves the failure experience rather than fixing a harmful failure. Since the risk is very low, we may not need to backport it.
