FWIW, I don't think it's safe to execute that before the tests get a chance to
clean. In systems like autoconf distclean will wipe out the makefiles and large
chunks of the build environment that the plug-ins may depend upon. Since I'm
already monkeying around with that part of the code, I'll fix it in the make
patch.
