Ugh.
I'm conflicted about this patch in a lot of ways, but I mainly see the terrible
design decisions made coming back to haunt me. It's clear as mud as to what a
user is supposed to do here and I can only hope that I can fix this/not make it
worse in YETUS-369.
That said, I'm not sure how to improve this without the full scale rebuild. So
+1, I'll commit this to master.
