Hi Michael;

I haven't had a chance to trace through this bit of the code and
understand what's going on, but it occured to me that one possibility to
eliminate is having a backup copy of the mail file with the old
references header. This would almost certainly lead to the thread
structure being preserved.

Not super likely to be the issue, but just in case...
