If you're serious about trying to track down the cause of CPU usage, I would suggest trying to see if one of the X apps can result in a CPU usage spike. Even better, if you have a small program to show a problem. For example, if you have some benchmarks over a series of time that show the driver operating worse after a particular version. That would allow the maintainers to revert whatever change caused increased CPU + mem use.
